The Explorers
Hello! Our names are Stijn, Iwan, and Jip and we call ourselves the Explorers. We chose that name because we like to explore new cultures, new languages and new ways to learn. All of us are very excited for the EUMIND project, because we would like to know more about Indian culture and language. [ The guy (2nd from the right) is called Duko. He was in our group, but then moved to Curacao. ] |
INFORMATION ABOUT OUR REGION
We all live in the city Tilburg. It's the 6th biggest city of the Netherlands with around 200.000 people living here. There is a lot of business here in Tilburg, but also we have some big sports clubs who participate in the highest level of their kind. Like the football club called 'Willem II'. They play football in the highest competition possible. The competition is called 'Eredivisie'. In Tilburg you also find a lot of other sports facilities. In our graphs and reading research you will find more information about that.

Sports choice and sports activities
Here in Tilburg fitness is the most popular sport. Almost 40% of the people who sport in Tilburg do fitness. Apart from fitness, jogging and walking sports are popular too. Something surprising is the fact that cycle racing is in the top 5 most popular sports. Two sports that have the same percentage are swimming and tennis. I think the most surprising thing is that skiing/snowboarding is more popular than football, hockey and golf. After skiing/snowboarding you find volleyball and golf. They both have the same percentage of people who play it here in Tilburg. After a lot of things, we finally find a very popular sport, football. It has the same percentage as gymnastics. The last sports are hockey, horse riding, indoor football and water polo. They all have the same percentage.
About Willem II
The most popular football club in Tilburg is ‘Willem II’. It plays in the highest league of the Netherlands. The league is called the ‘Eredivisie’. Willem II isn’t one of the biggest football clubs of the Netherlands, it’s an average one. In the history of Willem II you find some big surprises. The greatest achievement was the one with the coach Co Adriaanse. They reached the Champions league!
T-Kwadraat & the Ireen Wüst ice rink
One of the most popular places to go sporting in Tilburg is T-Kwadraat. Many different indoor sports can be played here; like football, volleyball, basketball,
and korfball (a typical Dutch sport which is a lot like basketball), but there also are some outdoor courts for hockey, tennis and badminton. Since September this year, there is a large hall with fitness equipment.
The Ireen Wüst ice rink is located right next to the T-Kwadraat. The ice rink was named after one of our best ice skaters (Ireen Wüst), who has won multiple medals at the Olympics and world championships in ice skating. The ice rink has a 400-meter long track and a court to play ice hockey.
Reasons why people don’t sport
As you can see on the graph below the biggest reason why people don’t sport is simply because they don’t like sport in general. Another big reason is because some people have physical problems which cause that they can’t sport anymore. Other reasons are for instance because the people aren’t good enough or because the sport clubs are too expensive. I think we can decrease this amount of people who don’t sport with some workshops in Tilburg. A big event with as main theme sport is also a good option.
When do people sport?
The graph at the left handed side of this text box gives you a clear idea when people sport. The day people sport the most is on a Monday, just after the weekend. I think the reason why people sport on a Monday is because they want to lose all the weight they have eaten during the weekend.
People often sport in the evening. This is because usually all the trainings of the sports find place during the evening. Some adults sport in the evening, because they want to sport a little bit after their work.

What do we expect to find?
We think that football and hockey are the most populair sport in our region. In our opinion Tilburg has enough sport facilities for people who love to play sports. We expect that the younger people play football, dancing or hockey. The more mature people do jogging or hiking. We hope that we can improve the Physical Education Lessons, because it is better for your health to be busy with sports instead of sitting on a chair and play video games.

There was no Indian group that had sports as a topic, but we did get to ask some questions. There were some differences and similarities we found:
Comparison
Conclusion
In our reading research, we found most people do fitness, jogging or hiking for sport. However, our survey told us most people play football or hockey. We think, because most people who filled in our survey were teenagers, football and hockey are popular amongst kids of our age, and jogging, hiking and fitness are more popular amongst adults. This was exactly what we expected to find. There are enough sports facilities, like T-Kwadraat, and various football clubs like Gudok or Sarto. The sports facilities at school are rather good, almost no one had a problem with it. Only some minor issues, like lack of material, were mentioned. However, there were some problems with the sports facilities outside school. For example, many people complained about their sports club being too busy, and about the canteen being too slow. This was again, pretty much what we expected to find.
